Gentle giants with the souls of puppies. Everything you need to know about the most loving, laid-back breed in the cat world.

Born in California
in the 1960's
The Ragdoll breed was developed by breeder Ann Baker in Riverside, California. She selectively bred white domestic longhaired cats with specific traits, docile temperament, large frame, and pointed coloring.
The breed gets its name from the tendency of early cats to go completely limp and relaxed when picked up, like a ragdoll. This trait, combined with their striking blue eyes and silky coats, quickly made them one of the most popular breeds in the world.
"They go limp in your arms like a ragdoll — hence the name. It's the most endearing thing you've ever felt."
The dog of the cat world
Ragdolls are famously gentle, calm, and deeply affectionate. They follow their people from room to room, greet you at the door, and are the first to settle in your lap.
01
Floppy & Relaxed
Their defining trait, Ragdolls go limp when held, making them the most "huggable" cats in existence. They genuinely enjoy being cradled like a baby.
02
Quiet & Gentle
Ragdolls have soft voices and rarely use them. They communicate through gentle head bumps, slow blinks, and following you around the house.
03
People-Oriented
Unlike many cats, Ragdolls actively seek human company. They'll wait outside the bathroom door, sleep beside you, and greet every guest at the door.
04
Great with Kids
Their patient, easygoing nature makes them exceptional with children. They tolerate being carried and dressed up far better than any other breed.
05
Dog Friendly
Ragdolls get along beautifully with dogs, often playing and cuddling with their canine siblings. Their calm energy doesn't threaten dogs or other cats.
06
Playful but Calm
They enjoy playtime, toys, wands, and games, but they're not manic or destructive. They play gently and settle easily when the fun is done.

Markings

Colorpoint
Darker color on the face, ears, legs, and tail. No white on the body. The original Ragdoll pattern.

Lynx
Tabby striping, giving a wild, dramatic look. The stripes appear on the face, legs, and tail.

Bicolor
Has an inverted V of white on the face, white legs, and white belly. The most striking and dramatic pattern.

Easier to care for
than you'd expect
Despite their luxurious coats, Ragdolls are surprisingly low-maintenance. Their silky fur doesn't mat easily and they're naturally clean cats.
Grooming
Brush 2–3 times per week with a steel comb. Their coat is silky and rarely mats, much easier than Persian cats.
Health
Generally healthy. Watch for HCM (heart condition common in large cats). Always buy from a breeder who screens for it.
Nutrition
High-quality protein-forward diet. They're large cats who grow slowly — don't rush them to adult food before 12 months.
Indoor Only
Their trusting, docile nature makes them unsafe outdoors. They don't defend themselves well and may follow strangers.
